Good afternoon,
I hope this email finds you all doing well. This week is Support Staff Appreciation Week and I wanted to take a moment to thank our staff in the front office, our educational assistants, lunchroom supervisors, behavior support workers, and facility operators for the work they do every day to support students in their learning and teachers in their work with students. There are many different roles that play a part of the work we do every day at Arbour Lake School and each of these is valued and appreciated!
This week our grade 9s returned from a sailing trip on the west coast and report having “the time of their lives.” Thank you to our teachers who took time away from their own families not only to accompany our students on this trip, but to ultimately make this trip possible through hours spent planning and organizing prior to the takeoff. Our grade 8 students walked over to Robert Thirsk High School to enjoy one of their theatre productions and our grade 7 Band students were at Camp Evergreen for two days of band clinics and learning. Finally our grade 6s went off to Arts Common at City Hall to watch Secrets of the Whales, a National Geographic production filmed in 24 locations over three years. The film explores whale communication and their social structure, demonstrating that they are a far more complex species than one may think.
Next week is Mental Health Awareness week and we are hosting our first “Wellness Day” which we hope will become an annual occurrence. I’d like to thank those parents and members of the community that are giving of their time to come and support this day on April 30th and who have sponsored elements of the day. Engaging in activities we are passionate about and through which we find success, contribute to supporting our mental well-being and this day is designed to engage students in areas of interest. More details can be found in the announcements below.
Finally, thank you to those of you that have let us know if your child will not be returning to Arbour Lake School next year as this information is very helpful in the planning for next year. I am currently in the process of allocating our resources for the 2024-2025 school year and a full presentation of our RAM (Resource Allocation Method), or the school budget, will be presented at our next School Council meeting which is May 21st at 6:30PM. This is an in-person meeting that will include the council and society’s AGM.
I hope you have a great weekend and let me know if you need anything with which I may be of assistance.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nancy Lisi, Principal

Announcements:
Wellness Day April 30th
On April 30th, 2024, we are hosting our first annual ALS Wellness Day. This day is designed to allow students to focus on their overall well-being in different sessions focused around our physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. This day will allow our school community to come together and work on connections between students, staff, and our outside community. Most sessions will be grade 6-9 (Some do have age limits based on CBE requirements). We will also be starting the day with a pancake breakfast for all students to start the day off with some food and community.
In planning this day we reached out to our staff and community to share passions of theirs with the students. We have had a generous number of responses and have been able to bring in experts for different sessions and have had donations made for giveaways throughout the day, and a donation of snacks for students.
Our students will spend the day going to five different sessions that they will pick, and each session will be led by a teacher or outside expert. Each session is an hour long. They will still get their regular lunch break. YYC food trucks will be present at lunch with the opportunity for students to purchase food or a treat if they so choose.
Please let us know if your child has not been able to sign up for sessions. Thank you.
Bus Evacuation Drills
On Thursday, May 2, 2024, Southland Transportation will be conducting required evacuation drills with all of our bussed students. These drills will take place in the morning. Please advise your child that these will be occurring if they take the bus to and from school. Thank you.

Messages from School Council
Teen Triple P Seminars
Arbour Lake School Council is happy to share a learning opportunity presented for parents and caregivers of Arbour Lake School students. In collaboration with the Trellis Family Resource Network, we have the opportunity to host three seminars aimed at supporting skill development in parenting our teenagers. The teenage years are a time of tremendous change and development for our children and can sometimes be difficult to navigate as we're helping our teens move through puberty, friendships, other relationships, academics, and all the things in between.
We're excited to share these learning opportunities to support and engage our school parent/caregiver community and hope you're able to join us. The attached poster has additional information on each seminar. Please save the date for May 14th, 28th, and June 18th. Teams Virtual event invitations to follow.
