Hello everyone,

While a short week at ALS, it has been a busy one. On Monday, we proudly participated in our annual Terry Fox Run, and event that brings our school community together to honor Terry Fox’s legacy and raise awareness for cancer research. Each step taken during the run not only commemorates Terry’s journey but also supports the ongoing fight against cancer, reminding us of the importance of perseverance, hope, and community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this meaningful event and helped us make a difference!

Today our school took time to honor Orange Shirt Day, a day dedicated to reflecting on the legacy of Canada’s residential school system and recognizing the experiences of Indigenous children who were forced into these institutions. Originating from Phyllis Webstad’s poignant story of her orange shirt being taken away on her first day of school, this day symbolizes the cultural loss experienced by thousands of Indigenous children. At Arbour Lake School, we engaged in a meaningful activity, creating a paper chain where each link represented reasons why each student matters, reinforcing our commitment to “Every Child Matters.” As we move forward, we remain dedicated to supporting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, particularly in educating our students about residential schools and fostering intercultural understanding. Please remember that Monday marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and our school will be closed in observance. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to this important cause.

Tonight is our Fall Orientation Night from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. In addition to Orientation Night, we will hold “Meet the Teacher” conferences for grade 6 students. Meet the Teacher conferences must be booked in advance, however our Orientation Night is a drop in event. Open this evening will also be our Scholastic Book Fair, so please be sure to check that out as well. We look forward to seeing you there!

Please be reminded that tomorrow is a non-instructional day for students and as mentioned, the school is also closed on Monday, September 30th in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

I hope you have a great weekend, and if you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to reach out via email at nmlisi@cbe.ab.ca.
