Arbour Lake School - Weekly Message- January 19, 2024

Good afternoon ALS families,

It’s been a cold week of indoor lunch breaks, but we are hoping for warmer weather on the horizon for next week. Our grade 9 students faired the snowy weather and visited this zoo this week. They tell me it was “beautiful” to be there as the snowflakes started to fall earlier this week. Our grade 7s, on the other hand, had a day at Telus Spark on Wednesday and they reported having fun while learning about science. While there is work and cost involved on these off-site experiences, we feel they are valuable opportunities for students to see their learning in other settings and applied to relevant and “real world” scenarios. I hope that you feel the same way as well!

Today we engaged in a school-wide community building activity. Grade 6 classes were paired with grade 8 and grade 7s with grade 9. This was the first day for our buddy classes to meet and get to know each other. Icebreaker activities were designed to support them through this process. From the quick feedback we received all seemed to go well. We plan to engage our buddy groupings more throughout the year.

I would like to thank all of you that attended our School Council meeting on Tuesday, your support and interest in the work we do at ALS is so very valuable. Our next meeting is February 20th at 6:30PM and in-person (weather permitting). At this time, I will engage our community in a discussion around the upgrading process of our CCTV system. I hope you can mark your calendars and attend this session.

Report cards are available on PowerSchool next Tuesday, Jan 30th. Please create and save a PDF of your child’s report card if you like to keep a copy or need a copy for alternate purposes as the report card does not stay visible long term. We also move to Semester 2 of the school year on Jan 31st.  At this time, students in grades 7-9 will change complementary courses.

Please feel free to reach out at any time if there’s anything you think I can help you with. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and stay warm!
