Principal's Weekly Message- September 29, 2023

Good afternoon,

I hope this message finds you all doing well. Today was Orange Shirt Day and at ALS we paused to learn about the day and to make some connections between our own understanding and experiences and those of young people who were in residential schools. I spent the afternoon looking at the work of some of our grade 7 students, their art and reflections were beautiful. Please take a moment to talk with you child about their learning today hearing some of them was really inspiring. Saturday is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and I know there are many events occurring around the city. Our family plans to take advantage of some of the learning amongst these events, and I hope your family is as fortunate to be able to as well.

As we wrap up the first month of the new school year, we have been able to solidify our registration and enrollment numbers. Our school has approximately 745 amazing students, and many of them are new to the school. It has been exciting to welcome new communities and meet new families and students. I know I am still learning names and faces, but the first month seems to have gone well. Earlier today I sent a communication to grade 9 families informing them that we will be hiring an additional grade 9 teacher and creating an additional homeroom to better support the learning of our students. In years past we have had to do similar reorganizations and the support of our families has always been appreciated. I know it is not ideal, but the potential of 40 students in a grade 9 class feels less ideal. We commit to doing our best to minimize the disruption to learning as we go through this process.

I do hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Please reach out if you need anything at all.

Sincerely,

Nancy Lisi, Principal
